Klein, 42, had been on paid leave since Sept. 11 after the village asked Platteville police to investigate claims from residents that Klein had been working while under the influence of alcohol, Brownlee said. The village, located in the southwest corner of the state about 85 miles from Madison, also was concerned that Klein was not keeping in proper contact with the Grant County Sheriff’s Department while on duty, Brownlee added. When Klein showed up for an interview with a Platteville detective on Sept. 19, it was obvious to the detective that Klein was under the influence of alcohol, and he registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.07 percent on a preliminary breath test, Brownlee said.
