Athens-Clarke cop bribery case headed to grand jury

Authorities allege that while serving as a local cop in February 2012, Christopher Lee Burton arranged to have a fellow officer take a bribe from a friend who wanted to buy his way out of a DUI arrest. The other officer arrested Monroe resident Julian Larry Anderson for DUI and failure to maintain lane on Aug. 5, 2011, after an officer pulled his car over for weaving on West Broad Street, according to the citation. Anderson pleaded not guilty and was set to go to trial on the charges the following month, but in the meantime, authorities said, he asked Burton if he could help him out.

Burton told the arresting officer that Anderson would pay to dismiss the charge. When the officer told a superior about the bribe offer, Athens-Clarke Police Chief Jack Lumpkin asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate.
