NYC Police Officer Michael Pena Charged With Rape

New York City police officer Michael Pena was charge with "first-degree rape, criminal sexual act and predatory sexual assault".

Authorities say Pena grabbed the 25-year-old woman off a residential street in upper Manhattan, showing her a gun, before walking her several blocks through an alley to a deserted backyard, where he raped her.

That's not the only recent incidence of such crimes in the New York City Police Department:

In the spring, two NYPD officers were acquitted of charges they raped a drunken woman they had been summoned to help get out of a cab. The officers were convicted of official misconduct for repeatedly returning to the woman's apartment while telling dispatchers they were elsewhere. The police department fired the two officers within hours of the May verdict.

I'll bet that happens a lot. It has to take a lot of nerve for a woman to come forward. I am sure they are threatened and too afraid most of the time.

NYPD Officer Guilty of Sexual Assault, Jury Deadlocked on Rape Counts

Michael Pena was convicted on six counts, including predatory sexual assault, but the jury could not agree on the two charges of first-degree rape. They will continue to deliberate on those charges.

The victim had testified that Pena forced her into an apartment courtyard and raped her at gunpoint.

Pena's defense lawyer said Pena admits attacking the woman but never completed intercourse with her.

The victim sobbed in the courtroom as the partial verdict was read.

The predatory sexual assault charge carries the potential for life in prison.

Jurors had told the judge in a note late Tuesday morning that they remained stuck on the rape charges, and deliberations were becoming very contentious, defense lawyer Ephraim Savitt said.
