St. Paul, MN: Demonstrator tased, assaulted

On Sept. 2, 2008, Jason Johnson was assaulted and tased at an antipoverty demonstration outside the Republican National Convention:

On Tuesday afternoon, Jason Johnson of Indiana joined hundreds of people in Mears Park in downtown St. Paul to bring attention to poverty in the United States.
But within minutes, the crowd -- including Johnson -- moved to the street, after police apprehended a woman.
Before he knew it, Johnson said, police were grabbing him.
"I was grabbed by my shirt, taken by surprise and knocked unconscious by being shot by tasers," Johnson said.
Johnson said after being tased, police punched him and yelled at him to "stop resisting."
"The cops were screaming at me, 'stop resisting, stop resisting, stop resisting.' But because I had this electricity pulsed through my body, I was having convulsions, so I couldn't stop moving," he said.

Jason Johnson is among those planning to sue the city. Johnson said he doesn't know what initiated his conflict with police. He was charged with "conspiracy to use a harmful substance."
"I didn't have any dangerous chemical or substance on me," he said. "So I have no idea."
