In 1991, Rodney King was stopped, beaten and tasered by four Los Angeles Police Department officers: Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno and Stacey Koon. The beating was videotaped by a bystander and broadcast by the media.
Six days of rioting broke out when the officers where acquitted. The riots resulted in $1B of damage and claimed 53 lives.
The four officers were later tried on federal civil rights violations. Laurence Powell and Stacey Koon were found guilty; the other two were acquitted. Of the two officers who were acquitted twice, Theodore Briseno resigned from the L.A.P.D., and Timothy Was eventually was fired.
