    USA Today: Attendants: Give us the expedited screening that pilots get

    Just keep an eye out for Pinnacle FA's with matches & JetBlue FA's who are out of beer at home.

    Add another group to the growing list of exemptions. No doubt this will happen once it fades from public view.

    In April 2007 a United flight attendant was arrested in IAD with a concealed firearm. She had bypassed the checkpoint in ATL and taken it on her flight to IAD.
    In June 2008 an American Eagle ground employee in MIA was arrested after trying to transit the checkpoint with a firearm.
    In February 2008 a United ground employee was arrested in SFO for possessing a firearm at work. Police were tipped off by coworkers that had noticed the employee previously had been seen with a set of brass knuckles.
    In March 2009 a Delta ground employee in MCO was arrested after he bypassed security to get a duffel bag containing 13 handguns and a rifle aboard an aircraft.
    In June 2009 a US Airways gate agent in PHL was arrested for bypassing the checkpoint with a firearm and handing it off to someone that boarded a flight. Airline employees in PHL can still bypass the checkpoint.
    A passenger saw what happened? What about all the TSA's Behavior Detection VooDoo Practitioners? :eek::rolleyes:

    In May 2010 a Delta pilot was arrested in ATL after trying to transit the checkpoint with a firearm.
    In May 2010 a suicidal JetBlue pilot was taken into custody in the crew room in BOS; he had a firearm.
    In June 2010 a Delta flight attendant was arrested while trying to transit the checkpoint with a firearm in IND. She had bypassed the checkpoint in ATL the day before with the firearm. Airline employees in ATL can still bypass the checkpoint.
    In May 2011 an American Airlines ground employee was caught after trying to take a loaded firearm through the checkpoint in SNA.
    In September 2011 a JetBlue pilot was arrested in LGA after trying to transit the checkpoint with a firearm.
    In May 2012 a US Airways Express pilot was arrested in BUF with a loaded .357 Magnum in his bag.


    In September 2012 a US Aiways Express flight attendant was caught with a .38 revolver in her bag at the checkpoint in PHL. The PHL aiport LEO, while trying to unload the firearm, negligently discharged it into a wall. Nobody was injured.


    In November 2012 a American Airlines flight attendant was arrested at the security checkpoint in ORD after a loaded .22 caliber firearm was found in her bag.



    Everyone should be subjected to the same common-sense screening. X-ray of belongings, walk through / hand held metal detector, Explosive Trace Detection / Explosive Trace Portal. Nothing more, nothing less.

    I can't find it right now, but a while back I found an advocacy site promoting Known Crewmember / CrewPASS. It had a large graphic of a Nude-O-Scope image with a red circle and slash through it, and how flight attendants shouldn't have to go through it because they are Trusted Security Professionals.

    Meanwhile:

    "Convenient"? Well, beyond all the last line of defense and background check rhetoric, at least Ms. Nelson is being honest about that little aspect of being able to bypass screening. :rolleyes:

    I find all this very curious. After the crash of Pacific Southwest Flight 1771, where a terminated airline employee used his ID to bypass the checkpoint with a firearm, all crewmembers had to now go through checkpoint screening. Well, except all the airports they didn't. And never mind that David Burke was a ground employee, and ground employees have always been able to bypass the checkpoint.

    The more invasive the TSA becomes, the more airline employees want to avoid it. This in turn opens more loopholes, to the detriment of actual overall security.

    Anyone remember FedEx 705? If he had gotten away with it, that would have made Pan Am 103 look like a day at the beach!

    It's quite a story but doesn't light a candle compared to Pan Am 103. There were only 4 people on board (including the hijacker), and although the hijacker apparently had planned to crash the plane, nobody knows where. Casualties might well have been limited to the 4 on board.

    However, it does reinforce the idea that crew (hijacker was a deadheading flight engineer) should be screened right along with the passengers.

    We had a FedEx guy on the jumpseat not long after that happened. He said the cockpit was... a real mess.

    FAs are not being served very well by the Association of Flight Attendants. Just recently at US Airways, the membership voted down a tentative agreement by 75% after years of negotiations, with a 90% turnout. The Master Executive Council President was subsequently shown the door.

    With failures like this, the only things they can point to and say "Here's what your union is doing for you" are special privileges like bypassing security.
